The phenomenon that was (wrongly) called postmodernism a while ago, which I prefer to call more appropriately 'fluid modernity', is increasingly certain that the only constant thing is change, and the only thing that is certain is uncertainty. A hundred years ago, 'being modern' meant trying to reach the 'highest stage of perfection' possible - now it means an endless process of development, the absence of an ultimate goal and such desire that can be achieved. In Fluid Modernity, Bauman examines how we moved from hardware-focused heavy and solid modernity to software-based light and fluid modernity.
