- Kalamış’ın masal zamanlarının köşk ve bahçelerinde, sokak ve parklarında geçen neşeli çocukluk ve mektep yıllarında Pervin’in Muzaffer’e olan ilgisi, kendisiyle birlikte gizliden gizliye büyür. Pervin genç yetişkin çağında bu ilginin fark edilmesini beklerken, Muzaffer onun okul arkadaşı Nükhet’e ilgi duyar ve böylece Pervin’in daha da alevlenen aşkı, sessizce ve büyük bir fedakârlıkla derinlere gömülür. Bu esnada Birinci Dünya Savaşı başlar ve Muzaffer, Hukuk Mektebi’nden en yakın arkadaşı Nahit Refik’in aksine bir vatansever olarak Çanakkale Cephesi’ne gider. Onu uzaklardan gizlice uğurlayan ise Pervin Abla’dır. Askerliğinin kalan kısmını tamamlamak için İstanbul’a dönen Muzaffer’i artık bambaşka bir hayat ve büyük altüst oluşlar beklemektedir. Mahmut Yesari, 1926’da Yeni Ses gazetesinde tefrika edildikten bir yıl sonra kitaplaştırılan Pervin Abla’da bir aşk anlatısıyla birlikte esasında Çanakkale Savaşı’nı ve türedi harp zenginlerini konu edinir. Çanakkale Cephesi’nde bulunan yazarın hayatından da izler taşıyan romanda, cephe hattı ve savaşın dehşeti çok canlı tasvirlerle anlatılır. Savaş şartlarında İstanbul’da yaşanan yoksulluk ve sefalete karşın Nahit Refik gibi fırsatçı vurguncuların sefih hayatları ile her türlü bireysel ve toplumsal yozlaşma da gözlemci bir üslupla hikâye edilir. Mahmut Yesari (1895-1945) 18. yüzyıldan itibaren sanatçı yetiştiren Yesarizade ailesinin bir ferdi olarak İstanbul’da doğdu. Soyadını büyük dedesi ünlü hattat Yesari (solak) Mehmet Esat Efendi’nin lakabından aldı. Burhan-ı Terakki Mekteb-i İbtidaisi’nden sonra İstanbul Sultanisi’ni (İstanbul Erkek Lisesi) bitirdi. Resme yeteneği dolayısıyla devlet tarafından Avrupa’ya gönderilmek istendi ancak I. Dünya Savaşı’nın patlak vermesi üzerine Sanayi-i Nefise Mektebi’ne (Güzel Sanatlar Akademisi) kaydoldu. Bir süre sonra askere alındı ve yedek subay olarak Çanakkale Cephesi’ne gönderildi. Matbuat dünyasında ilk olarak Gıdık ve Diken dergilerindeki karikatürleriyle görülen Yesari, askerlikten sonra gazetecilik ve yazarlığı meslek edindi. Mütareke yıllarından itibaren çeviri, adapte ve telif olmak üzere kaleme almaya başladığı tiyatro eserleriyle Türk tiyatrosunun gelişmesine büyük katkılar sundu. 1923-24 yıllarında Reşat Nuri Güntekin’le Kelebek adlı edebi mizah dergisini çıkardı. Bu dergide yazıları, hikâyeleri ve ilk romanı Bir Namus Meselesi yayımlandı. Cumhuriyet’in ilk yıllarında başlayan yoğun yazı hayatı, 1945 yılında veremden vefat edene kadar aralıksız devam etti. Dönemin pek çok dergi ve gazetesinde hikâye, tefrika roman, tiyatro, fıkra, deneme, eleştiri ve hatıra yazıları yazdı. Erken Cumhuriyet döneminin popüler romancılarından olan Yesari, onlarca yapıt ve yüzlerce hikâyeden oluşan eserlerinde aşk, evlilik, yalnızlık, yoksulluk, yozlaşma ve sosyal adaletsizlik gibi konuları sade bir dil ve realist bir üslupla kaleme almıştır.
