- İMPARATORLUĞUN BELKEMİĞİ SEÇKİN BİR ASKERÎ SINIF: YENİÇERİLER. Kökleri Orhan Gazi’ye uzanan ve I. Murad döneminde asıl askerî kimliğine kavuşan Yeniçeri Ocağı, katı disiplinleri, tüfek kullanmadaki ustalıkları ve savaş meydanını inleten mehter müziğiyle 15. ve 16. yüzyıllardaki büyük fetihlerin mimarı ve Avrupa’nın korkulu rüyasıydı. Başlangıçta yalnızca padişaha sadık yenilmez bir askerî güç olmalarına rağmen zamanla saflıklarını kaybederek idarecileri bile tehdit eden isyancı bir siyasi kitle hâline geldiler. Yeniçeri Ocağı, nihayet Sultan II. Mahmud’un 17 Haziran 1826’da çıkan fermanıyla ortadan kaldırıldı. Bu hadise, tarihe “Vaka-i Hayriye” yani “hayırlı olay” olarak geçti. Peki, kimdi bu yeniçeriler? Sıkı bir disiplinle yetiştirilen bu askerler, asırlar içinde nasıl oldu da kendi sadrazamlarını, hatta padişahlarını katleden, kışlalarını terk edip esnaflığa soyunan ve yenilgilerle anılan güruha dönüştü?
